A retired soldier and balloons

Jay came to the Poetry Corner at Storylines and wrote a cool poem about balloons. Jay is 8 and goes to Maungawhai School in Mt Eden. Jay sent me this haiku which I thought made a really strong picture grow in my head. I am also posting the balloon poem. Great job Jay. Have fun with the story poem!

A Retired Soldier

A torn-up shield
Cracked and scraped, unwanted
Banished and worn out.

Balloons

Round, coloured shapes

drifting into the sky,

tugging at their strings

in a desperate attempt

to escape,

dodging birds and aeroplanes,

slowly deflating.

Some background on Jay’s “A Retired Soldier” haiku: It was inspired by a fallen autumn leaf. Jay thought it looked like a shield, and that’s where the poem came from.
